IU Press author leads conference on contemporary antisemitism

Alvin Rosenfeld, IU Press author and Director of the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism, will lead a conference April 3-5 exploring the revival of antisemitism around the world. "Resurgent Antisemitism: Global Perspectives" will be held at the Indiana Memorial Union and will host 30 scholars from around the globe. 

"There is widespread awareness that we are living in a time of heightened antisemitism, and that this is something that needs to be understood and addressed," Rosenfeld said.

Alvin Rosenfeld holds the Irving M. Glazer Chair in Jewish Studies and is Professor of English at Indiana University Bloomington. He is author of the forthcoming book The End of the Holocaust and editor of Thinking About the Holocaust and The Writer Uprooted.

Bonnie Morris speaks at prestigious lecture series

For our readers in the Washington D.C. area, author Bonnie Morris will be a guest lecturer for the prestigious Wednesday Morning Group Lecture Series on April 6 at 10 a.m. in Bethesda, MD. Last Folio authors discuss new exhibit on CBS morning show

Yuri Dojc and Katya Krausova, authors of Last Folio, discussed the opening of their exhibit on CBS 2's morning news show Eye on New York Sunday, March 27. The exhibit, also titled Last Folio, opened March 25 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and features Dojc's photographs of once-vibrant Jewish communities in Slovakia. In particular, Dojc focuses on a schoolhouse that was left untouched for over half a century after its students were captured during the Holocaust.

Author event: Mukulika Banerjee speaks on Indian identity, global politics

Mukulika Banerjee, editor of Muslim Portraits, will speak on "Unarmed Pathans: History or Future?" Friday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Oak Room of the Indiana Memorial Union. The lecture is presented by the IU Dhar India Studies program and will explore the history of the Pashtun people as warriors, their movement toward non-violence, and the significance of this change for contemporary global politics. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Booksigning: Staci Newmahr at Erotic Heritage Museum

Staci Newmahr is an ethnographer. Her work plays with intersections of risk, eroticism, and gender. She is currently Assistant Professor of Sociology at Buffalo State College.

'Butler's Big Dance' author weighs in on tonight's game against Wisconsin

After last year's amazing run at an NCAA title, the Butler Bulldogs hope to repeat their previous tournament success as they face Wisconsin tonight. Susan Neville, a Butler professor and author of Butler's Big Dance, says that the Bulldogs' performance in the NCAA tournament is "particularly sweet this year because the team came alive late in the season, winning the Horizon League championship and then winning that amazing game against the number 1 seed Pitt."

"Butler has been a bracket buster for several years now, and it says something about the coaching and the program that we've made it this far again."

While the campus is excited about the Bulldogs' making it to the Sweet 16 again, Neville says the mood isn't quite as surreal as it was between last year's Sweet 16 game and the Final Four.

"The media descended and the alums came back and all the trees were blooming and we watched the world watching the campus. We were in a world we'd never been in before, and it was giddy. I'm not sure anything will ever feel quite like that one particular week felt."

But the level of excitement may surpass "surreal" if Butler can take home the title this year. Neville is doing her part to make sure the Bulldogs stay contenders for the NCAA championship. For tonight's game, she is repeating the same rituals as she did for Butler's previous Sweet 16 appearance.

"We're having the same friends over to our house that we had last year. We'll have the same food. We'll sit in the same spots in the family room. ...Friday morning we'll all get up and go to work. Unless I drive down to New Orleans for the weekend! And that's a distinct possibility."
