If you're an IU student who has always dreamed of having a fabulous career in writing, editing, or publishing, then I have the perfect event for you! The IU Career Development Center and the IU Student Alumni Association will host a Writing, Editing, and Publishing Networking Night Tuesday, November 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the DeVault Alumni Center. Students will have the opportunity to hear five panelists discuss their careers and to network with them during the event.

Yours truly is one of the five featured panelists, along with Malcolm Abrams (editor/publisher, Bloom Magazine), Bob Kravitz (columnist, Indianapolis Star), Joel Pierson (editorial services manager, Author Solutions), and Bob Zaltsberg (editor, The Herald-Times). Kentucke's Frontiers wins Kentucky Governor's Award

Congratulations to Craig Thompson Friend, whose book Kentucke's Frontiers won the 2011 Kentucky Governor's Award! This award, given every four years, honors the author who made the most significant contribution to Kentucky history during the Governor's term. The Office of the Governor and the Kentucky Historical Society present this award together.

Author event: Books Inc. to host booksigning with Kathy Sloane

Books Inc. will host a booksigning and talk with Kathy Sloane for her book Keystone Korner Nov. 5 at  7 p.m. (PST). This event is free and open to the public.

Booksigning and concert to celebrate the release of new book on David Baker

A concert and booksigning will take place at KRC Catering in Bloomington Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. to celebrate the release of Monika Herzig's new book David Baker: A Legacy in Music. This concert will feature musical guests associated with the book including Melvin Rhyne and friends, Jamey Aebersold, the Tanager String Quartet, Monika Herzig, the IU Jazz Ensemble, members of the IU Jazz Faculty, and more. The program will musically complement each chapter of the book in sequence.

Herzig, Baker, and several contributors will sign copies of the book, which will be available to purchase at a discounted price.

Tickets are available at the Sunrise Box Office for $10 to the general public, and $5 to students, seniors, and Jazz from Bloomington members. Dinner is a separate charge, and can be purchased at KRC that night for $15.

Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit Jazz Masters in the Schools, which offers free educational jazz programs to area elementary schools.

Author event: Michael Martone to speak at University of Missouri

Michael Martone, author of Not Normal Illinois and Double-wide, will speak as a part of University of Missouri's Creative Writing Program's Reading Series this Thursday, Oct. 27. During this event, Martone will read from one of his books and talk about writing and editing. This part of the event is free and open to the public, and will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Tate Hall 215.  

On Friday, Oct. 28, Martone will lead a private workshop with some graduate students to discuss their work. For more information on the event, read this Missourian article. 

Kathy Sloane to appear on KPFA radio show

Kathy Sloane, author of Keystone Korner, can be heard this Saturday, Oct. 29, on the Berkeley, CA radio station KPFA 94.1 FM. She will be interviewed on Kris Welch's   "Saturday Morning Talkies" show, which airs from 9:00-10:00 a.m. (PST). Sloane's interview will begin around 9:30 a.m. (PST).

Author event: Daniel Greene to lecture at Houston Hillel

Daniel Greene, author of The Jewish Origins of Cultural Pluralism, will give a lecture this Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Houston Hillel Student Center. The title of his talk is "The Jewish Origins of an American Idea: The Menorah Association and Cultural Pluralism." This event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by Houston Hillel Student Center, the University of Houston College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and the El Paso Corporation Lecture Series. Appalachian State University to host book launch for Feminist Disability Studies

Appalachian State University will host a book launch Oct. 25 to celebrate the release of Professor Kim Q. Hall's new book, Feminist Disability Studies. This event, which is free and open to the public, includes a talk by Dr. Ann Fox titled "Loving the Monsters: "Performing Feminist Disability Studies".

The book launch begins at 6:00 p.m. in Information Commons Room 421 in the Belk Library with a reception to follow. For more information, visit Appalachian State University's website.
