November author events for Norbert Krapf

Norbert Krapf, author of Songs in Sepia and Black and White, has the following events planned for November:

November 3

Village Lights Bookstore in Madison, IN, will host a free Songs in Sepia reading and booksigning with Krapf from 1 to 3 p.m. Later that evening at 7:30 p.m., he will recite poems from his new book with musical backing by Gordon Bonham (suggested $15 donation).

November 10

Krapf will read from Songs in Sepia at 2 p.m. at Bookmamas in Indianapolis, IN. The event is free. 

November 15

Twenty Indiana poets will gather at Indiana Landmarks in Indianapolis, IN, for a Poetry on Brick Street reading of new poems about, fittingly, Indiana landmarks. As part of the event, Krapf will read a new poem about the Wollenmann House in Ferdinand, IN. The free reading starts at 7 p.m.

November 17

Krapf will present a free reading of Songs in Sepia at Viewpoint Books in Columbus, IN at 2 p.m.

IU Press director Janet Rabinowitch to speak at Purdue this Wednesday

In honor of the Association of American University Presses' 75th anniversary, Purdue University Press is hosting a seminar titled "The University as Publisher: Strategies and Opportunities." The seminar will focus on how changes in the scholarly publishing landscape have affected universities, what new opportunities are arising, and how publishers can better serve scholars in the digital age.

IU Press director Janet Rabinowitch, along with Dr. Timothy Sand, acting president of Purdue, and Ellen Faran, director of MIT Press, will discuss these issues.

The seminar will take place on October 31 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the East and West Faculty lounges in the Purdue Memorial Union. The seminar is open all members of the Purdue community, and refreshments will be served.

Halloween poetry by Norbert Krapf

Have you ever thought how the pumpkins feel when they are used for our eating and decorative pleasure? Norbert Krapf considers this point of view in the following poem from his collections Invisible Presence and Bloodroot (I'm blogging this as I'm drinking a pumpkin latte, so I hope the "Army of Orange" forgives me!):

Army of Orange

We’ve had it, we’re fed up,
get out of our way, we have
joined forces. Today the patch,
tomorrow the whole wide world!
We are the Army of Orange.

No more pies on Turkey Day!
No more soups with nutmeg
and butter. Keep your nasty
knife to yourself, stop cutting
out those toothy grins
& stupid triangular eyes!
Never again will you dare
to roast & salt our seeds
or stick a burning candle
in the middle of our belly.

If you think you can keep on
slinging our slimy guts
into the garbage, Mr. and Mrs.
Homebody, why don’t you just
pucker up and give our bottoms
one great big resounding smack?

UC Berkeley to host book launch for 'Racing to Justice'

The University of California, Berkeley will host a book launch for john a. powell's Racing to Justice November 7. He will discuss his new book from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Maude Fife Room, 315 Wheeler Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. A reception and booksigning will follow the lecture.

IU Press to exhibit at the Southern Indiana Writers' Festival

Come visit the IU Press booth at the Southern Indiana Writers' Festival November 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.! The inaugural festival will be held at the Knox County Public Library in Vincennes, IN, and is sponsored by the library and the Writers' Center of Indiana.

The festival is open to the public and includes writing workshops, a book fair, and a literary tea. Tickets for the tea as well as a registration roster for the workshops are available at the library.

During the book fair, we will be selling and showcasing many titles from our Break Away Books series.

Two IU Press books finalists for Herskovits Award

Jonathon Glassman, author of War of Words, War of Stones, and William Cunningham Bissell, author of Urban Design, Chaos, and Colonial Power in Zanzibar, have been selected as finalists for the African Studies Association’s 2012 Melville J. Herskovits Award.

This award is presented annually by the African Studies Association (ASA) for "the best scholarly work on Africa published in English during the previous year."

The winner will be announced during a ceremony at the ASA's annual meeting, which will take place November 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the Marriott Philadelphia Downtown in Philadelphia, PA.

Author Diane Sasson to perform with band Kindling Stone

Yearning for the New Age author Diane Sasson will collaborate with band Kindling Stone for an evening of acoustic music and spoken word this Friday, October 26 at 7 p.m. at the Scarritt Bennett Center in Nashville, TN. Sasson's readings and comments about the search for religious identity will be interspersed with roots and Shaker inspired music performed by the band. Martin Dean to discuss Holocaust encyclopedia at USC Shoah Foundation Institute

On October 29 from 4 to 6 p.m., the USC Shoah Foundation Institute will host a panel discussion, "Beyond Numbers: Creating a Personal History of the Holocaust" in the University of Southern California's Doheny Memorial Library, room 240. Panelists will talk about Volume II of The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, edited by Martin Dean and Geoffrey P. Megargee, and Wendy Lower's The Diary of Samuel Golfard and the Holocaust in Galicia.

Panelists include Holocaust encyclopedia editor Martin Dean, along with Wolf Gruner, Crispin Brooks, and Wendy Lower.
