The American Association of Italian Studies has awarded The Maciste Films of Silent Italian Cinema the 2016 AAIS Book Prize.
Author Jacqueline Reich's book was recognized for its excellence in the Film and Media Studies category. The Maciste Films of Silent Italian Cinema narrates how Italian film star Bartolomeo Pagano's role as "Maciste" shaped Italy's narratives of identity regarding masculinity and virility. Reich explores how Maciste came to represent the ideal Italian citizen during a turbulent period in Italian history.
The American Association of Italian Studies strives to "encourage, support, and conduct research activities in Italian culture" through many efforts, including annual book prizes.
